Inter-House Cricket Tournament 2008 Report

The domination continues……. Kambar house does it again!!

As if to pay back for the picnic, The Weather Gods made it a perfect day for cricket.

The turn out was encouraging, “The Enthusiasts” numbered 60, but the number of “Next Generation” climbed to 6! There was a “warm up” game of Kambar vs. “Rest of the Houses”. The serious encounters started thereafter.

Bharathy took on the defending champs, and their 33 for 6 was overhauled by Kambar with 4 wickets to spare.

Lunch was taken at 1:30PM, where everyone was treated to a traditional “Biryani ” feed.

The contenders – Valluvar – scored 62 for 6 in their 12 overs and limited Elango to 43 for 8.

Game 3 had Elango taking on Kambar. Elango were bundled out for 21 for 9 and Kambar reached the total without the loss of any wickets.

The tea break at 4PM also saw traditional Srilankan short-eats, patties, rolls and vadai served out to all.

The encounter between Bharathy and Valluvar was a little closer, but the latter still prevailed to reach the 43 with 6 wickets to spare.

The two unbeaten teams met up in the finals. Kambar won the toss and took the field first. The opening salvo from Dilrukshan and Madan kept the Valluvar openers under check and accounted for the dangerous Kishor. Fielding captain marshalled his bowlers well to contain Valluvar to 36 for 5 in the allotted 10 overs.

Kambar reply was a see-saw battle. Valluvar came in hard with the ball that Kambar was left reeling at 3 for 1 at the end of the 3rd over. The line and length were immaculate from Valluvar. When 5 overs were done, there were only 8 runs on the board. The restless Kambar bench prompted a visit from the skipper to the two batsmen in the middle. The fire was thus kindled and the game was wrapped up by the same batsmen in 8.3 overs.

Kishor of Valluvar house was adjudged the best all-round player for the tournament.

Jubilations, commiserations and then plain old camaraderie continued on till late in the evening, making this event a resounding success.

Our heartfelt gratitude to the sponsors of this event, Sutha Sivaramalingam and Niranjan Udayakumar of Clarion Inn & Suites Belleville ($500.00), Mike Sivaharan of Dyna Lync ($300.00), Sivaprassad Sivapiragasam ($100.00) and Praba Jeganathan ($50.00).

Sivananthan Selvan of 5ive Networks Inc., provided everyone with white caps, matching the T-shirts provided by him a couple of seasons ago. Thank you very much indeed.

Additionally, The Committee would like to thank the captains, Praba Jeganathan (Valluvar), Kalachandran Kanapathipillai (Elango), Sivakumar Balasingam (Kambar) and Sitbavananthan Sahadevan (Bharathy)  for taking on this responsibility and help running the event smoothly.

A big “thank you” to the committee for bringing this event to fruition at a short notice and doing a masterful “Ground Crew” job. Young Mr. Kowshikan needs an honourable mention for his tireless energy and enthusiasm in all-round assistance the previous evening and on the morning of. Incidentally, he also holds the records for having played for all the teams!!
